Safely brake even heavy loads

An integrated automatic overrun braking system allows safe transport of even heavy loads. When the towing bike decelerates, the trailer’s dual disc brakes are automatically activated, bringing you to a safe and controlled stop.

(Planned release for 200 kg payload)

Universal coupling

Coupling from German professionals Weber, allows a quickly detachable and robust fitment to almost any bike. The coupling can be coupled and decoupled in seconds.

(Weber ES Coupling recommended)

About

Matthew Bibby at work

Matthew Bibby is the designer, inventor and founder of Bibby bikes. As a lifelong passionate cyclist and years working as an engineer in design, development and production of motorcycles and cargo bikes, he is well versed in the important factors and various approaches regarding cargo bike design.

Many products in the bike industry may look sleek on the surface, but under the surface they are overly complex, susceptible to defects, full of proprietary components, and struggle to fulfil their core practical purpose.

Bibby Bikes takes cargo trailers back to their roots: simple, durable, and practical; Engineered for real transport.

FAQ

Use

A: YES! In most European countries, bikes and trailers up to 1m width may use all bike infrastructure. Additionally, usually it is not mandatory for trailers, so you have the choice of either the bike path or the road, as you prefer. (Please check local rules and regulations yourself)

A: No! In Europe and most of the world, a bike trailer can be attached to a bike without further bureaucracy. Of course a helmet and third party insurance remain nonetheless diligent. Please check local regulations yourself.

A: No! The trailer is easy and straightforward to use. A first short practice in a traffic free area is advised. And just as a truck should be driven more slowly and carefully than a sports car, extra care should be taken when towing any trailer.

A: It is made of robust steel with a weather resistant powdercoat finish. It can be stored outside if necessary. It can easily be stored on-end, dramatically reducing the amount of floorspace that it takes up.

A: The trailer uses robust and standard bike and industrial components where possible, making the service intervals very long and the servicing and spare parts very simple. The bearings, tyres, brakes, coupling and fasteners are all standard parts available to any bike shop. The design is so simple that a competent mechanic can disassemble and service the trailer with simple instructions.

Tech

A: No. This keeps the trailer simple, cost effective and robust. You can easily benefit from electric support by towing it with a common E-bike (Pedelec). A robust modern city or trekking bike is recommended.

A: Weber couplings are available for almost any bike. See the manufacturer’s website here: weber-products.de Additionally, the drawbar is designed for any bike with wheels up to 29 inch! (60-622)

A: Compared to ‘standard’ two wheeled trailers the advantage of multi-axle trailers is clear, especially for heavier loads – the drawbar doesn’t push down vertically on the bike’s coupling, making the trailer carry its weight independently and offering greater stability, as well as the ability to easily use the trailer as a hand cart without carrying weight and balancing the trailer via the drawbar.

Compared to three wheeled cargo trailers, the Bibby Bikes trailer has a smaller external footprint making it easier to park and more manoeuvrable, as well as a larger and unrestricted cargo bed.

Comparing specifically to a well-known ‘elephant’ from the German black forest:

  • the payload is the same at 200kg* (*provisional)
  • nearly 10 kg lower trailer self-weight (35 vs 44 kg)
  • a 19% bigger load bed (800×1600 vs 650×1650 mm)
  • 16% more compact width (800 vs 952 mm), makes narrow alleys and fitting between posts easier
  • 30% more compact trailer external length (1600 vs 2300 mm), makes parking and manoeuvring easier

A: The rear lights are simple common battery powered bike rack lights. They have a manual on/off switch as well as an automatic mode, switching on independently when it is dark and they sense movement.

A: The overrun brake functions automatically, reacting to the braking force of the towing vehicle, to automatically apply the brakes on the trailer. This is a common technology in car and truck trailers and works reliably to increase safety for heavier trailer loads. The twin rear disc brakes are standard bicycle cable disc brakes and are easily adjustable and serviceable. The brake force between the two brakes (L/R) is also automatically equalised. The actuation mechanism is a proprietary design using mostly standardised industry components and standard bicycle brake cables. The brake mechanism is serviceable by any competent bike shop.

A: There is a Worldwide Patent pending covering the specific design inventions of Bibby Bikes. For licensing, please get in touch.
